In 1976 and 1977, Janet Guthrie broke new ground in NASCAR Winston Cup (now Sprint Cup) races in her No. 68 Kelly Girl Chevrolet. In 1976, she became the first woman to earn a starting spot in a superspeedway NASCAR Cup race, in the 600-mile race at Charlotte, where she finished 15th.
